At international conferences and congresses, seminars and symposiums, trade fairs, training courses, panel discussions, hearings, negotiations between business partners, supervisory board and (European) works council meetings, interviews, press conferences and numerous additional events
The speech will be translated almost in real time – simultaneously - from the original to the target language. As a rule, two interpreters sit in a soundproof interpretation booth, which is integrated into the overall technical conference equipment with headsets, microphones and loudspeakers. The interpreters alternate regularly because simultaneous interpreting requires utmost concentration. With large conferences, setting up several booths for the different languages makes for a multilingual event.
With this special form of simultaneous interpreting the interpreters "whisper" the translation into one or two persons' ears. In this case they sit behind their customers and not in an interpretation booth. For factory visits, conducted tours or brief events in small groups, the interpreters can use a portable interpretation equipment (PFA) in order to serve more listeners. Neither of these modes of interpreting, however, can be considered to be a substitute for interpretation booths because of the background noise in the room.
The interpreter sequentially renders lengthier parts of the speech (several minutes) into the target language with the help of special note-taking. This mode of interpreting is suitable, for example, in the case of dinner speeches, shorter addresses, words of welcome, receptions and business negotiations.
